Why can't I mark a task as "Done" or "Closed" even though it appears in my task list?
Last updated: April 17, 2026
You can only mark tasks as complete if you're individually assigned to them. Tasks that are assigned only to a team cannot be marked as done or closed until they're reassigned to you specifically.
Canvas requires individual accountability for task completion. When a task is assigned only to a team without an individual assignee, any team member can view it, add comments, and update details, but no one can mark it complete. This ensures clear ownership and prevents tasks from being marked done without proper individual responsibility.
To resolve this, you have two options:
Ask the task creator or a team member with appropriate permissions to reassign the task to you individually
If you have the necessary permissions, update the task yourself by clicking on it and adding yourself as the individual assignee while keeping the team assignment
Once you're individually assigned to the task, you'll be able to mark it as "Done" (for completed work) or "Closed" (for tasks that are no longer relevant). The task will then move out of active workflows while preserving the completion record in your task history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How can I tell if a task is assigned to me individually or just to my team?
A: Look at the Assignee column in your task list. If it shows your name, you're individually assigned. If it's blank but the Team column shows your team name, it's only assigned to the team. You can also click on the task to see the assignment details.
Q: What happens to team visibility if I assign a team task to myself individually?
A: The task remains visible to your team members, but it won't appear in their default "Me or my team unassigned" filter anymore since it now has an individual assignee. They can still see it by switching to the "Me or my teams" filter if they need to track its progress.
Q: Can I reassign a task that was originally assigned to me to just the team instead?
A: Yes, you can remove yourself as the individual assignee and leave it assigned only to the team. However, once you do this, neither you nor other team members will be able to mark it complete until someone is individually assigned again.
