How do I create a DME Prescription for a Patient?
Last updated: March 25, 2026
Follow these steps to create a comprehensive Durable Medical Equipment (DME) prescription:
Navigate to the patient's chart
Select Letter from the available New Note dropdown
Include required information in the message body of the letter.
For Example: Equipment name (e.g., "CPAP machine with humidifier") - Quantity needed - Pressure settings or clinical instructions - Diagnosis with ICD-10 codes (e.g., Obstructive Sleep Apnea) - Your business name and NPI number - Relevant patient and insurance details
Fax and/or Print the letter for the patient to take to their chosen DME supplier
Result: The patient will have a complete prescription document they can present to any DME supplier to obtain their DME equipment.
Creating a Template for Future Orders
For providers who frequently order DMEs:
Create a Letter template with standard DME prescription information
Include placeholders for patient-specific details (pressure settings, diagnosis codes)
Save the template for streamlined future requests
