Structured Reason for Visit

The Reason for Visit command frames the motivation for the documented encounter. Canvas offers the option to have a structured or unstructured reason for visit. This article outlines how a Structured Reason for Visit is managed.

Enable Structured Reason for Visit

  • Under the Constance: Config setting, locate the STRUCTURED_REASON_FOR_VISIT_ENABLED

  • Click on the check box under VALUE to enable and save.

    • Value box checked = Enabled

    • Value box unchecked = Disabled

Adding a Structured Reason for Visit

  • Note: If you don't see the "Reason For Visit Setting Coding" option in your Practice settings, you may need appropriate permissions. Contact your system administrator or Canvas support to ensure you have access to this configuration section.

  • Under settings, locate Reason For Visit Setting Coding under the Practice section and select + Add reason for visit setting coding

  • Fill in the following fields to add a new reason for visit option and save

    • System: LOINC, SNOMED, INTERNAL

    • Code: Used by developers

    • Display: How it will be listed in the dropdown

    • User Selected: When checked, the reason for visit is active. When unchecked, the reason for visit is inactive.

    • Reason for Visit Setting: Durations that need to be available for scheduling need to be listed under the Chosen Schedule Duration column

Updating a Structured Reason for Visit

  • Under settings, locate Reason For Visit Setting Coding under the Practice section

  • Click the reason for visit that needs to be updated, make needed adjustments and save.

Deactivating a Structured Reason for Visit

  • Under settings, locate Reason For Visit Setting Coding under the Practice section

  • Check the box for Reason for Visit(s) needing to be deactivated.

  • Select Deactivate from the Action dropdown and click Go

  • The same rules apply for reactivating a Reason for Visit but Activate will be selected from the dropdown menu
