Canvas provides a range of pre-defined permission groups that can be assigned to users, granting them different abilities within your instance. Additionally, you have the flexibility to create your own custom groups tailored to your specific practice requirements.

Tips & Tricks

  • Unlike Teams, where overlapping responsibilities are not allowed, multiple groups in Canvas can possess the same permissions.

  • Mac users can hold the Command key, and Windows users can hold the Shift key to select multiple permissions simultaneously.

Create a New Group

  • Click on the Canvas Menu (represented by the hamburger icon)

  • Select Settings

  • Select Groups (located under Authentication and Authorization)

  • Select the Add Group icon

  • Enter the title of your group in the Name field

  • Search for or Select permission(s) you’d like to add in the Available permissions box and select.

  • Move the selected permission(s) to the Chosen Permissions box by double-clicking or using the right arrow.

  • Select Save once all needed permissions have been added

Edit a Group

  • Click on the Canvas Menu (represented by the hamburger icon)

  • Select Settings

  • Navigate to Groups (located under Authentication and Authorization)

  • Select the Group you’d like to Edit

  • At this time you can:

    • Edit Name of Group

    • Add Additional Permissions

      • Search for or Select permission(s) you’d like to add in the Available permissions box and select.

      • Move the selected permission(s) to the Chosen Permissions box by double-clicking or using the right arrow.

      • Select Save once all needed permissions have been added

    • Remove Permissions

      • Select the permission(s) you want to remove from the Chosen Permissions box

      • Move the selected permission(s) to the Available Permissions box by double-clicking or using the left arrow.

      • Select Save once all needed permissions have been removed

Remove a Group

  • Click on the Canvas Menu (represented by the hamburger icon)

  • Select Settings

  • Navigate to Groups (located under Authentication and Authorization)

  • Select the group you wish to edit.

  • Select the red Delete button

  • You be directed to the Are you Sure? page

    • This page will display the areas that will be affected by the removal of this group

  • Select either Yes, I’m sure to delete the group or No, take me back to cancel your request.
